Gurgaon might be part of the Delhi NCR region but it has no form of public transportation.
Rickshaws are hard to find. And they can only take you to a smaller distance.
Auto Rickshaws are non-existing. And if you manage to catch one, it would either be a multi-passenger carrying pain or it would cost you a bomb.
The Haryana government has announced that the city of Gurgaon would ‘soon’ get 62 inter-city luxury buses.
This would be in addition to 200 city buses.
Sounds like a good plan.
The problem is… where are the roads? Where are the bus stops? The city is jam packed with traffic during rush hours. The city is a mess even during the non-office hours. Where are these buses going to ride? Over pedestrians? Or over two wheeler riders?
Looks like Gurgaon is all set to get its own Killerline Express.
One simple way is to segment the market. As happens in many of the Indian and international cities.
1. Create different type of bus service.
a) Those who are willing to pay more - provide better bus services to them. How: by providing buses at higher charges with better facilities or simply buses with higher fares. As higher fares will segment the market. Those who are willing to pay get a less crowded bus. Part of the extra money can be used to augment the overall number of buses in the city.
b) provide buses with AC: this has been done but in a very limited way. This could shift traffic pattern. This means people will consider leaving their private vehicles for these better quality bus options.
c) Mini buses: Places with less traffic density could be served better with smaller buses. this will reduce the cost of operation so will compensate for lesser revenue on these routes.
2. Operational Issues
a) Blue lines should be done away with as it leads to unhealthy competition
a) Outsource the maintenance of buses to save on costs of operations.
b) HRTC could invest in longer buses and double decker (as is done in Bangalore by BMTC). This will reduce the costs of operations for HRTC and save road space and make the traffic and commuters move faster.
c) HRTC should use the space on buses (inside and outside) to raise resources (i.e. money) for its healthy growth
d) HRTC should have 60 percent of buses on KM-Scheme model with HRTC conductor on each bus.
